Antibodies to Sm have a high specificity (~95%) for Disseminated Lupus Erythematosus. Together with antibodies to dsDNA. They can be considered path gnomonic for this condition, but occur in only 5 - 10 % of patients. On the other hand, the SmD1 synthetic peptide of Sm has been shown to significantly improve sensitivity (Upto 70%) without affecting the specificity. This is an ACR criterion marker forSLE.
